Many people enjoy the challenge of DIY work, especially when they're on a budget.

Following safety tips can prevent things from going horribly wrong.

Ladders

Using a ladder may seem obvious but simple tasks such as pruning, cleaning out gutters and painting a ceiling can lead to serious injury. Thousands of hospital visits happen each year from ladder accidents.

By following some simple ladder safety tips the risk of injury can be reduced:

  • check your ladder's condition for wear and tear
  • new ladders must meet the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL)
  • choose the right ladder for the job
  • don't work in wet or windy conditions
  • take time to set up your ladder safety
  • work safely up the ladder
  • have another person hold the ladder
  • know your limits and work to your ability.

Product Safety Australia produced a video series of stories from people who've fallen from ladders. The video below is Mick's story, you can view John's and Paul's story on Product safety Ladders page.

Plumbing and electical

Even if you're a handy renovator, never DIY electical and gas work. Use a licensed tradesperson to do your plumbing and electrical work.

When it comes to more new or complex tasks, ask your local hardware store for advice. Check out online for videos and tips from reliable sources about how to get the job done well and safely.

It can be smarter to use a tradesperson to get a job done right. You are also covered by the Australian Consumer Law for any trades you hire.
