This is the second stage in the review of laws affecting co-operatives in Western Australia.
Status: Closed - Monday 29 February 2016
Consumers and business who believe they may be affected by proposals to amend the Co-operatives Regulations 2010 were urged to consider the proposed changes and to make a submission to the review.
A Bill to amend the Co-operatives Act 2009 (the Act) to implement the Co-operatives National Law Scheme in Western Australia was introduced to Parliament on 18 November 2015 and is likely to be debated early in 2016. As the Australian Uniform Co-operative Laws Agreement currently requires implementation of consistent laws by 18 May 2016, we are circulating information about the proposed amendments to regulations that support the Act to all co-operatives now, and also welcome submissions from other interested parties.
Our goal is to ensure the laws are appropriate in the current marketplace and are operating in the interests of both consumers and business. It is intended that the regulations will be consistent with the National Regulations (which were the subject of national consultation during 2013) unless local conditions require a different approach in the regulations in Western Australia.
The review also provides an opportunity to look at ways of improving the legislation, removing unnecessary regulation and reducing red tape for business.
A comparison table has been created to describe the variations between the current regulations in Western Australia and the National Regulations, and proposals for addressing those differences.
The review provides a vital opportunity to have your say about options for improving the regulation of co-operatives. You are strongly encouraged to provide input to the review.
Consultation phase for submissions is now closed. If you have any questions, please send them to us via email.
