The Director of Energy Safety can prohibit the sale/hire/use of an appliance or component if considered that such appliance/component is, or is likely to become, unsafe or dangerous in use. This applies also to gas appliances/components that are approved.
Appliances that may be unsafe or dangerous should be switched or turned off and the matter reported to the Director.
Product Safety Australia is a website of the Compliance Strategies Branch of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, the national law enforcement agency that is an independent Commonwealth Government statutory authority. The website provides the public with information about voluntary safety related recalls notified to the Parliamentary Secretary and to the Treasurer.
The Director of Energy Safety has prohibited the sale and use of any new or second-hand LPG cabinet heaters. The Prohibition Order came into effect on 8 July 2024 and was published in the Government Gazette on 12 July 2024.
An LPG cabinet heater is a portable flueless space heater designed for indoor use. Typically operating on LP gas supplied by an 8.5kg cylinder located within the appliance.
These heaters have been banned in Western Australia for the following reasons:
For the above reasons, the use of these heaters can lead to an unacceptable risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, serious injuries, or death of the building occupants.
If you own an LPG cabinet heater, turn the cylinder valve off, remove the LP gas cylinder and do not, under any circumstance, use or offer to sell the appliance. If you are unable to return the appliance to the seller, you should consider disposing the heater in a safe manner.
Consumers should not purchase gas appliances from overseas online platforms unless the appliance is approved for use in Australia. The gas appliance should have a Conformity Assessment Body approval number displayed on the appliance data plate. For more information, refer to Building and Energy’s Type A gas appliances webpage.
The remedy for this recall was updated on 29 January 2024. An inspection is no longer required, all affected water heaters that have not already been inspected will be replaced for free.
A national recall has been issued for Suburban Recreational vehicle water heaters.
The affected models are: SW6DEA, SW4DEA, SW4DECA, SW6DECA, SW6DA, SW4DA and SW6PA. Serial numbers are between 181315552 and 193002648 (some serial numbers may end with a 'D') or 8183311827 and 8190201139.
They were available for sale nationally by Coast RV PTY Ltd between 1 May 2018 and 25 September 2019.
A component of the water heater may be improperly manufactured and allow carbon monoxide into your caravan, motorhome or horse float camper.
If the unit is powered by gas and is operated in an enclosed area - such as a caravan or motorhome - carbon monoxide may spill into the vehicle and poisoning could occur resulting in serious illness, injury or death.
Consumers who have not already had their unit inspected must not use the affected water heater in gas mode under any circumstances, even if they have a carbon monoxide detector.
The remedy for this recall was updated on 29 January 2024. An inspection is no longer required, all affected water heaters that have not already been inspected will be replaced for free.

Gas heaters provide safe and economical heating for millions of Australian families.
Laboratory testing suggests that it may be possible that Cannon Fitzroy or Canterbury inbuilt gas heaters built between 20 March 2001 and 8 October 2009 under AGA approval 6118 could produce potentially hazardous levels of carbon monoxide if the heater is subjected to certain conditions, including the operation of range hoods and other exhaust fans. The risk may be increased if the inbuilt heater has not been installed properly, or if it has not been serviced regularly, or if your house if tightly sealed.
The build date and AGA approval number of the heater appear on the heater's ratings label, which is located within the lower fan chamber, and which a suitably qualified person can access by removing the lower fascia panel of the heater.
If you think you have one of these inbuilt gas heaters, you should not use it until you have had it checked by an authorised Cannon service technician to ensure that the operation of exhaust fans or the installation of the heater does not affect the safety of your heater. You or your technician should call Cannon with any questions or concerns.

Barbecue - 6 burner solid hotplate - 'Jumbuck' - Model BG1507B6 Item number 3171031. Batch numbers are labelled on the side of the unit, numbers are 1516, 1518, 1522, 1525, 1529 inclusive. Sold since June 2015 (Price: $299.00).
In isolated cases, burners may not align correctly with the gas delivery jets. Upon ignition the gas within the barbecue burner is likely to light at the jet rather than only at the burner ports.
If the defect exists, the flame at the jet may cause its corresponding plastic control knob on the outside fascia of the barbecue to get very hot. This may result in burns to the fingers upon contact with the knob.
