The building engineer’s registration scheme (the Registration Scheme) commenced 1 July 2024 and will be implemented in two phases over three years.

The scheme is prescribed under the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011 (WA) (the Act). Under the scheme, engineers must be registered to undertake design, construction or production work in prescribed areas of engineering for a building or incidental structure under the Building Act 2011 and the National Construction Code.

Initial registration timeline

Structural and fire safety engineers, fire systems designers
On 1 July 2024 registration will commence for structural, fire safety and fire systems engineers. There is a 2-year transitional period, ending on 30 June 2026, during which unregistered people may continue to do this work.

Structural, fire safety and fire systems engineers need to lodge an application to register by no later than 28 February 2026 to ensure they are granted their registration by the end date. Registration starts from when you are approved by the BSB, not from when your application is lodged.

Civil and mechanical engineers
On 1 July 2025 registration will commence for civil and mechanical engineers. There is a 2-year transitional period, ending on 30 June 2027, during which unregistered people may continue to do this work.

Civil and mechanical engineers need to lodge an application to register by no later than 28 February 2027 to ensure they are granted their registration by the end date. Registration starts from when you are approved by the BSB, not from when your application is lodged.
